Update…
SO as our many prayer teams, and many small groups, our growing campuses all are still babies in a way. We have another thing that could possibly place us into a possible “progressive” category. We are having Bible Study Training and beginning to toy with the idea of lay pastors. This does not make us as progressive as the wonderful churches in Africa. Also, ANY church that is striving to alter their 10/90 activity ratio, I would call progressive. What does all this mean?...Let me describe MY personal idea of a real progressive church.
A pastor is valuable. I mentioned African churches. Their pastors often lead five to 15 churches some as many as 20...HOW? Well lay pastors are mentored by the pastor who travels between churches sometimes two or three a Sabbath. while he is away they write and give sermons, and lots of people know how to give BibleStudies. His job is different than a normal American pastor because...the members do a lot more work, they lead more, they try harder, and all that is left for the pastor to do, is write sermons, give them, mentor and train lay pastors, and sometimes baptize. He leads more from a vision driven standpoint, maintaining locations and administrating. He does not initiate or vote about a prayer group, or when pathfinder sabbath is, he does not suggest canned food drives. He does not have time, or need to ask if the rafting trip has a leader, or if our next primary instructors are lined up. He does not even worry about song service. It is always about kissing Jesus’ toes, crying out adoration to the Creator anyway.
It seems like churches are a lot better equipped to fight over members than bring in new believers.
Satan and the rest of the unwise angels are hard at work. I believe that a progressive church will help its members to see spiritual battle for what it is.
If you observe any of the following in your church, then you have discovered a new prayer request! (these are negatives)
1. You need permission to start a prayer group.
2. You don’t know anyone from the church who would pick you up in the middle of the night from anywhere.
3. There has ever been scornful looks cast
4. There has never been minorities represented in your congregation
5. The pastor is the only one to give bible studies to those wanting Baptism
6. Most members don’t know what “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” is.
7. You don’t hear a lot of Bible texts in the sermons
8. Most members can’t quickly articulate the “Gospel” or the “Plan of Salvation”
9. You have a dwindling number of young people.
10. If you are not willing to do anything about any of these problems (pastors EXCLUDED)
When I say at the beginning “If...Then you have a prayer request” I mean now write your thoughts down about spiritual revival in your church...find one other person...and pray together about it.
May God bless the one who carries these concerns to the congregations for more prayer.
